BATON ROUGE, La. — On Fridays in the month of October, Chortazo Fine Art Gallery and Studio hosted survivor Fridays. These free paint parties were created to bring awareness to Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence. “I wanted to make sure that women in the area had an outlet to relax and hear from survivors,” said Celeste Payne, event coordinator, and gallery owner. “I reached out to some local business owners and asked them to partner with me, and they did.” Murray and Murray Law, Integrity Automotive, and Winfield Funeral Home made the event a success. Special guests were Latoya Jefferson, volunteer coordinator for The Butterfly Society, and author Abigal Johnson Williams. The guests ranged from young women in their 20s to a seventy-plus mom who lost her daughter to domestic violence a few years ago. They painted a survivor ribbon with flowers on a wood background.
“We are looking to do more events like this in the future,” said Payne. To learn more about art classes and activities as www.chortazoarts.com.
