Avatar: The Way of Water has won the weekend box office. This was an unsurprising things as the James Cameron movie has been highly anticipated. What was surprising is that it didn’t win as big as expected. Over the course of the weekend, the movie brought in $134 domestically and $301 million overseas. This brought its global total to and impressive $435 million.
The strength of the opening weekend made it the third biggest global opening weekend since the pandemic. Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are the only two that had stronger opening weekends at $600 million and $442 million respectively.
While this is a solid opening for the weekend, some expected the numbers to be larger. This movie is having a bigger opening weekend than the original Avatar which brought in $77 million on its opening weekend domestically. It then continued to grow and build over time, eventually becoming the biggest movie of all time at the box office. Generally, movies by James Cameron tend to grow and build over time at the box office. Disney, who owns 20th Century Studios and the Avatar franchise undoubtably hopes this is the case for this film as well.
Disney took four spots of the top five at the box office over the weekend. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever took the second spot. Strange World took the fourth spot and The Menu the fifth. Avatar: The Way of Water does not have a lot of competition at theaters so is expected to have a strong run through the holidays.
