BAKER, La. — Brenda G. Jackson, a retired educator, longtime community volunteer and current sitting Councilmember for District 5. announced her candidacy for Mayor of Baker, Louisiana.
Jackson, 67, a Democrat and Opelousas native, brings a wealth of experience to the race, having served 8 consecutive years as council representatives for District 5 and 26 years as an educator in the East Baton Rouge Parish public schools
A resident of Baker since 1995, Jackson is a graduate of Opelousas High School and Southern University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in early childhood education.
Throughout her time in Baker, Jackson has been actively involved in various community organizations, including the Chaleur Homeowner Association, Baker High Football Boosters, and Baker Band Boosters.
Additionally, she has served on the Baker Planning and Zoning committee and a former member of several local groups, including the Main Street Pilot Club of Baker, Baker Inter Club Council, Baker Heritage Museum, and Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast Committee.
Jackson's commitment to service has earned her recognition, including the 2015 Volunteer of the Year award from the Baker Chamber of Commerce and In 2019 Circle of Excellence Honoree for Outstanding Leadership by ASHA #1132
In a statement, Jackson expressed her dedication to listening to the concerns of Baker residents and working tirelessly to address their needs.
"I am eager to bring my passion for education community involvement and my 8 consecutive years as District 5 Council Representative to the role of Mayor of Baker," Jackson said. "With your support, I am confident that we can create a brighter future for our city."
