Mental Health Awareness Month: Empowering Journalists Through Self-Care

Media 2070's Wellness Resource List Prioritizes BIPOC Journalists

The contributions of BIPOC journalists are invaluable, as they bring a diverse perspective to the newsroom, often at the cost of their mental health and being undervalued. Unfortunately, newsrooms often fail to adequately support BIPOC journalists who experience trauma from reporting on anti-Black violence. As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month this May, Media 2070, an advocacy project dedicated to improving equity in media, has taken action by developing a “Wellness Resource List” for BIPOC reporters.


Not only does the list promote self-care practices, but it also reminds journalists of the power of rest and self-love. The list includes resources to help exhausted and overloaded BIPOC reporters prioritize their mental health and self-care. The resource list is organized into three key areas: slowing down, nourishing the body, and finding movement, and include a variety of curated resources, such as reflections from The Nap Ministry, breath prayer exercises, food as medicine, yoga instruction, and a curated playlist for dancing.


Media 2070's "Wellness Resource List" sparks a much-needed conversation about mental health in journalism. To achieve a more just and equitable media landscape, the industry must prioritize the well-being of BIPOC journalists. With improved support and resources, BIPOC journalists can continue to bring compassionate and comprehensive reporting that reflects the diverse experiences of our society.
